Global food and beverages major PepsiCo will look at bringing down sugar contents in its softdrinks, Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal said here on Tuesday.
The Minister met PepsiCo Chairman Indra Nooyi here. According to an official note, PepsiCo was requested to further bring down the sugar content of soft drinks so that the health aspects of such products were duly taken care of.
“In soft drinks, they (PepsiCo) are looking at how to bring down the sugar content (but) that same cold drink has the taste but healthy contents in it,’’ the Minister said after the meeting.
During the meeting, Ms. Badal highlighted that large segments of kids in the rural areas were suffering from iron deficiency and suggested that PepsiCo should partner India for further research and development in developing such processed food products that could be supplied as part of the mid-day meals in rural India.
While discussing with the Minister, Ms. Nooyi said PepsiCo had already invested substantially in the domestic food processing sector and the company wished to double this investment in the coming years.
