Former union finance minister P. Chidambaram on Monday joined issue with Union Minister for Urban Development Venkaiah Naidu over the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate of 5.7 per cent in April-June.
>While addressing a function at Coimbatore, Mr. Naidu had asserted that the BJP government was responsible for the growth, the highest in the last 10 quarters. He said the Congress-led UPA could not take credit for the GDP growth.
Reacting strongly, Mr. Chidambaram in a statement said he was amused by Mr. Naidu’s argument.
“Growth did not revive in the first quarter and it was the UPA government that was in charge until May 26, 2014,” he said.
He also challenged Mr. Naidu to name one step of his government that was implemented in June 2014 that yielded results by June 30, 2014.
“He should stop being churlish and give credit where it is due,” Mr. Chidambaram said.
