Sensex surges 240 points

Stock indices surged on Wednesday as BSE 30-share Sensex closed above the 28000-mark hoping that a likely settlement was to emerge between Greece and the European Union.

The Sensex closed at 28,020.87 with a gain of 240.04 points or 0.86 per cent.

Meanwhile the rupee gained to 63.61 per U.S. dollar compared to 63.64 on Tuesday. On the NSE, the 50-share Nifty closed at 8453.05 with a agin of 84.55 points or 1.01 per cent.

A broad based buying helped all but one sector end in green. While, maximum traction was witnessed by stocks belonging from Capital Goods, Power and Banking counters, only stocks from FMCG counter succumbed to selling pressure.

Banking stocks stirred a lot of interest and featuring into top gainers list.
