Former President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, popularly known as the ‘Missile Man of India’ and the ‘People’s President’, was many things to many people. But for students, he was a rock star and an inspiration. A renowned scientist, thinker, philosopher and teacher, he spent a lot of his time visiting educational institutions to interact with students and motivate them. His discussions included a vast range of topics such as women empowerment, building an empowered India, judges as instrument of social change, creative leadership, elimination of corruption and so on — not easy topics to hold the attention of the youth for long. But when he spoke, they hung on to his every word, spell bound. As the nation mourns the death of this eminent personality, some students talk about how he influenced their lives.

I have read several books of Dr. Kalam. But if I have to pick a favourite, it would be Children ask Kalam. It was the first book I read written by him. I was in Class VI when the book came out. He answers every child's question with utmost sincerity and honestly, giving us reasons to dream but without painting illusions. That book changed my perspective when I was twelve and gave me hope. I'm sure that if I read the book again, it'll have the same impact on me even now. His words give us the confidence that we can beat odds and that where we come from does not matter if we work hard on where we want to reach.

Dr. Kalam was a visionary who was well beyond his time. He showed all of us that a simple beginning does not stop one from achieving great things. He promoted the idea of dreams as the future itself. Through his life, Kalam Sir showed us that science is more than rules, procedures and techniques. He is an epitome of hope. The spontaneous show of respect from the common man and the fact that millions of people look up to him showcases his uniqueness. His undying faith in humanity will live on.

How privileged am I as he chose to enter the God's realm on my birthday.

He continues to inspire millions with his inimitable style of comprehending the public's opinion on governmental affairs. He preferred to be one among the public and always took into consideration their suggestions. Each of my birthdays will now remind me of his vision. He taught us about the importance of staying humble and taking every step of our lives after ample reflection.
