Multi-gym: The State Government will sanction a multi-gym to Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara College, Ujire, shortly, K. Abhayachandra Jain, Minister of State for Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fisheries, has said.

Speaking at the annual day of the college the Minister said that the gym was required for rural sports talents to come up. There should be cordial relations between teachers and students for a healthy learning environment, he added.

D. Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, Dharmasthala, said that rural students should shed their inferior complex to face the competitive world. The objective of education should be to shape the personality of students and provide a platform for the growth of their talents.

Cultural festival: Shree Devi Institute of Technology, Kenjar, organised a technical, cultural and management festival titled ‘Sambhram, Medha and Echelon’ recently.

M. Shantharam Shetty, Pro-Chancellor, Nitte University, who inaugurated it said that Dakshina Kannada has emerged as a destination for education and medical treatment. Hence it attracted students from different parts of the country. Mahesh M.N., General Manager (Production), Bharathi Shipyard Limited, Mangalore, released a news letter ‘Spoorthy’ of the computer science department. A. Sadananda Shetty, Chairman, Shree Devi Education Trust, presided. Dilip Kumar K., Principal of Shree Devi Institute of Technology, gave an introductory note.

In all, 40 technical and 15 cultural events were conducted for two days. There was an auto expo which attracted many students.

In ‘Sambhram’, the overall championship was bagged by Srinivas Institute of Technology, Valachil. In ‘Medha’, St. Agnes College, Mangaluru, bagged the overall championship in the undergraduate level, and St. Joseph Engineering College, Vamanjoor, bagged the overall championship in the post-graduate level. In ‘Echelon’, Alva’s Institute of Technology, Moodbidri, bagged the overall championship at the undergraduate level and S.D.M. College, Mangaluru, the overall championship in the postgraduate level.

NIT-K conference on banking: The Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, (NIT-K), Surathkal, organised a conference on ‘Emerging issues in banking and finance in a technology driven economy.’

G. Gopal Krishna, Director, Centre for Advanced Financial Research and Learning, Reserve Bank of India, in his keynote address spoke on revised capital adequacy norms; banking reforms especially with regard to the functional autonomy and the operational flexibility for the Indian banking system, financial inclusion and use of technology; data mining for risk management; and financial literacy and the governance issues before the government and the RBI.

N.K. Thingalaya, former chairman and managing director, Syndicate Bank, spoke about how the ATMs have come to play a big role in financial inclusion and how computerisation has percolated to the grassroots.

Swapan Bhattacharya, Director, NITK, appreciated the contribution of the Indian banks to the ever changing socio- economic realities. He said that the local banks could make use of the technological expertise of NITK in solving real time issues.

A.H. Sequeira, Head of the Department of Humanities, Social Sciences and Management, welcomed the gathering. A colloquium on the theme ‘Developments in economy, banking and finance’ was organised as a part of the conference. M.S. Moodithaya of Nitte University presided over it.

MoU signed: Mangalore University and Karnataka Government Research Centre, Sahyadri College of Engineering and Management (SCEM), Mangaluru, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for collaborative research and development, education and training. It is to work together in areas of common interest in research and development like projects relevant to advanced materials for technology and nanotechnology of composite materials involving design and testing. Under the MoU, the faculty of both the institutions can interact and develop a strong research community for R&D assignments, M.S., M.Tech., Ph.D. programmes, short-term training and short-term courses.

Manjunath Bhandary, Chairman, Sahyadri Educational Institutions, advised the faculty to keep the MoU active by utilising the research facilities at Mangalore University.

C. Ranganathaiah, Director-Research, SCEM, asked the staff members to take advantage of the MoU and make use of microtron and other facilities available at Mangalore University.

K. Byrappa, Vice-Chancellor, Mangalore University, said that engineering and basic science research should go together. P.S. Yadapadithaya, Registrar, Mangalore University, said that the MoU supports effective collaboration to enhance the brand equity of both the institutions.

Workshop: Mangalore Institute of Technology and Engineering, Moodbidri, organised a two-day workshop on data analytics and hadoop. Lohith Samaga, Delivery Project Lead, Mphasis, Mangaluru, in his keynote address said that the volume, velocity and variety of data generated by the vast number of users and variety of applications were so large or complex that they are difficult to process using traditional data processing applications. The amount of data generated by these applications will be in tera or peta or zeta bytes. So we need to use distributed Big Data processing frameworks such as hadoop.

Resource persons from Mphasis Technologies, Wipro Technologies, Infosys Technologies, and academic institutes addressed the workshop. G.L Easwara Prasad, Principal, Mangalore Institute of Technology & Engineering, was present.

Social sciences: The Department of Political Science, St. Aloysius College, Mangaluru, conducted a special programme on ‘positing social sciences’. It was to make a positive change in the conventional ideologies about the arts stream.

Speaking on the occasion, Shonna Rodrigues, a scholar from JNU, Delhi, said social science is not only about theories but also about the practicalities which it teaches for everyday management.

A panel discussion was held.
