Bathing in the open, flanked by greenery, pebbles and open air sounds like the perfect setting to unwind in after a hard day’s work. Designers now bring in skylights and greenery into bath spaces by converting bathrooms into swanky bath spaces laid under an open sky with pebbled pathways leading to them.

Think different An open-air bath space could be teamed with a lily pond and a restive nook under a tree to meditate to lend further the feel of bathing in the wild. On a smaller scale, the shower or bath tub could be placed under the open sky, surrounded by pebbles and greenery to give that outdoorsy feel.

If you don’t fancy a real outdoor opening in your bath space, the same effect can be simulated by a glass roof or even a glass wall overlooking a lush green private courtyard.

Likewise, a play of light and shadow can be brought by pergolas in a sky-lit space. Architect Gayathri Shetty of Gayathri and Namith Architects, says, “Pergolas bring in interest through the ever changing shadows they create as the day progresses.”

Glass walls Bath spaces can be structured as part of the bedroom décor by use of a demarcating glass wall. Says Gayathri, “Bathtubs can become a part of the bedroom space where they serve as the wellness area. This brings in a touch of luxury.”

Colours While a bath space reflecting nature is best kept in earthy colours, an invigorating feel can be brought about by the use of strong colours as accents. For instance, red accent tiles over a sink, a striking graphic on the wall, or even quirky bathmats. The wall graphic could be in the form of tiles or a stunning painting.

Contrasts A back-lit sink creates a dramatic effect. Or use a Victorian bathtub in a contemporary setting or elaborate stone tiles in an otherwise toned down décor.
