Dosas are the flavour of the season again and they’re lining up hot and crispy at Café Canopy in Hotel Abad Plaza. The café’s well known dosa festival is back for a new iteration and the signature taste has remained the same.

We take our seats in a cosy corner and go through the spread on offer, and it is a pretty expansive affair. The festival menu is divided into two, a breakfast menu and a lunch and dinner set. For breakfast, diners get the option of choosing between vegetarian and egg-based dosas and uthappams, like the cheesy onion dosa and the kada mutta dosa, while the non-vegetarian fare includes favourites like the Andhra chicken dosa.

But it is in the main menu that the dishes really spread their… batter. Before chowing down on delicious dosas, don’t forget to try out the creative starters made out of tiny idlis . Enter the idli paneer manchurian, the hot little chilly idli, and the new addition this year, the idli beef biriyani, all of which insert the soft, steamed idli as the central focus into these popular dishes. Exercise a little restraint here though, what follows requires some attention.

The dosas are many and varied, and almost every diner’s preference is addressed. You get thattu dosa combos that include khorma, sambar and chutney, Malabari prawn dosa, peppy paneer uthappams and another mouth-watering proposition, the butter chicken dosa. The crispgolden dosas hide a rich, pasty masala within them, equal parts spicy and delicious. Apart from the filling of choice, diners can opt for a variety of chutneys, from regular to tomato, to an unseasoned mix of raw mango and coconut.

Vegetarians get a fair few options here too, with paneer taking a few different avatars, apart from cauliflower masala dosa, Mexican cheese dosa, mushroom, onion and capsicum dosa, and many more.

And in case the sweet tooth must satisfy its cravings, Canopy’s pastry display, Patisserie, is just a few steps away. A 12-layered slice of ‘chocolatey’ goodness lands on our plate, and the sight of the different hues of chocolate on each layer makes us consider if we should have our cake or eat it. Ten minutes later, we take our leave, with an empty plate left behind.

The dosa festival is on from 7.30 a.m. to 11 a.m and 3 p.m. to midnight till June 14.
