What sets a band apart from the rest? For some, it’s their name while for some it’s their attitude and for most others, it’s their music. But for Bengaluru electro-rock band One Nite Stand, it’s the direction their music is taking them. With over 100 shows in 2014, a sold out India tour and having signed up with Universal Records, One Nite Stand is very happy with the way things are right now. From playing a one-time gig for a friend’s wedding to creating original music and making a name for themselves as one of the most sought-after bands in the city, the four-member band has come a long way.

Sharing his thoughts with MetroPlus , band frontman Behram says: “We have worked very hard. At this juncture, it is overwhelming for us, especially the support we’ve got from people in different cities. I’m a little scared personally because I had never dreamt we would be here. But it’s a fantastic start to something much bigger.”

Comprising Behram Siganporia on vocals and bass guitar, Hemanth Diwakaran on lead guitar, Abhilash E.K. on drums and Jonathan Anand Wesley on keyboard, One Nite Stand’s infectious ‘dance rock’ music has won hearts across the country.

Commenting on Bengaluru’s music scene, Behram says they’ve travelled across the country and can say for a fact that Bengaluru musicians are one of a kind. “There is so much talent here. The music community is really well connected. Bands attend one another’s gigs and offer support. At the same time, it’s a very challenging and unforgiving market. You need to be really good to come up here. There are also music lovers who know their music. Of course, every band does its part to make the scene so vibrant. It’s definitely the most happening music scene in the country.”

On crossing the 100-show mark, Behram says: “It wasn’t really a target. We were just looking at our records in November and realised that we were closing in on the 100-show mark. So we went for it.” Will they pull it off again in 2015, he says they are taking a three-month break to record their album, “but if we can still hit the 100-show mark after that, there’s nothing like it.” Their debut album, Behram explains will feature compositions steeped in rock, combined with electronic music for a new-age, contemporary sound. “Hopefully it should be out in the latter half of the year.” Best describing their music as electro-rock Behram says it’s a sound that has really worked for them. “It is something that gets everyone dancing since it is very groovy music. There are strong rock soundscapes with elements of groove that gets you on your feet.”

Elaborating on the story behind the band and its name, the founder said a friend getting married in December 2011 wanted a band to perform at his wedding. “He knew Hemanth, Abhilash and me and got us together to play for the party a night before the wedding. It was going to be a one-time gig that night so we settled on the name One Nite Stand. The show was a success and lots of people wanted us to take it forward. The chemistry was unreal and we were playing music that we wanted one another to play almost telepathically. So after the wedding, we started work on the band and roped in Jonathan. One show led to another. Since then, there has been no looking back.”

Looking forward though, Behram says the name is expected to change. “We feel it is not doing enough justice to the band’s sound. The one night stand has turned into a longer marriage so there is a good chance of a name change. We want people to write in to us with suggestions for new names and if we choose one of them, that person will always get free entry to our gigs, free band merchandise and bragging rights that they suggested the name!”

Of the future, Behram says, “This is something we are all passionate about and someday hope to live off. Having completed a sold out India tour, 100 shows and an album coming up, there is a possibility that we could go global and tour outside India as well. We are working to ensure we get into the international market.” Behram sums up with this message: “It’s always the right time to become a musician. If you believe in yourself and this is something that you want to do for the rest of your life, put your heart and soul into it and you will be successful. You can live a very happy life if you follow your dreams and work hard towards it.”
