As actor Purab Kohli evolved from the small to the big screen, so did his style. It is still evolving, he says, choosing to be a trendsetter rather than a follower.

In his latest movie Jal , Purab plays Bakka, a water diviner (a person who has the power to find water) who tries to solve the drought problem in his village. His look for the film is complete with traditional Gujarati costume, turban and a moustache.

According to Purab, Bakka is the most stylish character he’s ever played. “Bakka dons ethnic stuff but is still stylish with his jewellery and moustache. Being stylish is not always sporting what’s in, but putting on what you can carry off and believe will be good,” explains the actor regarding his concept of cool.

We grill him more on his style and what it means to be termed a metrosexual male.

You have done reality TV, been a VJ and, now into films. Does styling differ for each of them?

It’s the content that defines the style in any medium rather than the medium itself. Of course, you have to look your best, but that has to complement the content and mood of the shoot.

Do you pay a lot of attention to what you wear?

Not at all. I have a team that takes care of it. But for me comfort comes first. That is my criteria while buying clothes. Also, I feel that when we shop, we never get what we want and so end up making do with what we get. When I work with designers and like their clothes, I ask them to make similar stuff for me. I get most of my shirts and suits tailored.

So your style can be described as comfortable?

Yes. But sometimes some find my style a little strange. Like when I finished working on Jal , I got used to sporting the dhoti and would wear it even while going out. People find it strange. But the watchman of my apartment gets excited whenever he sees me in dhoti!

Who is your biggest fashion critic?

Everybody around me, as everyone has an opinion regarding what looks good or not.

Would you call yourself metrosexual?

If it means to be well-groomed, then no. In fact, I am horrible at it. It is my team that makes me metrosexual. I live in Goa and I don’t use sun-block. So whenever I turn up for a shoot with all the tan, my make-up man gets frustrated.

What is the most metrosexual thing you’ve done?

I had a pedicure done. Also, once my sister waxed my chest — I think it was some sort of childhood vengeance.

A look that works for you and one that doesn’t…

I like Indian ethnic and also think it looks nice on me. Something that I think I cannot pull off is a Scottish kilt — I would look ridiculous!
