What happens when you take a Gujarati boy and a Tamil Iyer girl, and let Murphy’s Law rule the impending nuptials between the two? You get Madras Lights’ production of Murphy’s Wedding , a laugh riot where everything that can possibly go wrong on a wedding day, does.
“The play begins on the morning of the wedding, when the bridegroom wakes up with a strange girl in bed beside him. From there on, many disasters unfold — one promptly followed by another,” says director Amit Singh. The play, however, is not just a comedy. It’s a love story, which also features a budding bromance. “Rishi plays the groom and I play his best friend. We have such awesome on-stage chemistry that it worries the girls in the play, because we don’t even have that going with our respective partners on stage,” laughs Amit.
Inspired by a British story, the script was adapted by Rishi, and comes interspersed with local lingo and lots of laughter. “The moment you perform an English play on stage, it comes off sounding alien with names like Peter, Mark, John. We wanted the language to fit into the Chennai milieu and cracking that was the tricky part,” says Amit.
The play will be staged on August 7 and 8 (7.15 pm) and on August 16 (3.15 p.m. and 7.15 pm.) at Museum Theatre, Egmore. Tickets priced at Rs. 300 and Rs. 500 are available at madraslights.com and eventjini.com. For details, call 98848 14222.
