An aged couple were brutally attacked by culprits at their house near Kovilpalayam in the outskirts of the city, during the wee hours of Wednesday. The injured couple M. Meenakshisundaram (66) and M. Shyamala (63) of Lakshmi Garden, near Kovilpalayam, were admitted in the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

The police suspected that two persons could have attacked the couple. “We are not able to confirm the number of accused as both the victims are not in a condition to talk,” the police said.

Superintendent of Police of Coimbatore District Police M. Sudhakar told The Hindu that the miscreants attacked them with a blunt object and fled with a pair of earrings and a gold chain – weighing three sovereigns – that Shyamala wore. Four special teams have been formed to nab the accused, he said.

The SP stated that Meenakshisundaram suffered a cut on his neck. “His wife suffered a cut behind her neck and was admitted in the intensive care unit. Doctors said that she will be kept under observation for two days as her condition is said to be serious,” the SP said.

After conducting preliminary inquiries Mr. Sudhakar said that the miscreants entered that house through the window near the front door, attacked the couple and fled with the jewellery.

“The victim’s daughter-in-law V. Marimuthu (32), who slept in another room heard her in-laws cry for help and informed her husband Vijaykumar (37) who went to work. He informed the police, after which we rushed to the spot,” he added.

“Forensic experts collected finger and foot print samples from the spot. Police sniffer dog went to a distance of about 5 km from the house and stopped.” A case was registered under section 397 of the India Penal Code.
