AIADMK, DMK councillors clash

November 01, 2014 11:40 am | Updated 11:40 am IST - COIMBATORE:

All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors clashed with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam councillors on Friday at the Pollachi Municipality. The issue: the latter wanted their leader M. Karunanidhi’s picture to adorn the Council hall just as AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa’s was.

Heated arguments among them turned into a fisticuff resulting in a few councillors from both the parties landing in hospitals with injuries.

According to the sources, trouble started when DMK councillors walked in holding a picture of their leader. Chairman V. Krishnakumar wanted to know why they carried their leader’s picture. The DMK councillors retorted saying since Ms. Jayalalithaa’s picture was in the Council Hall, their leader who too was a former CM was as much qualified as she was and his picture should find a place in the Council.

In the mêlée that ensued, both sides exchanged blows. The Pollachi Police rushed to the spot, pacified the warring councillors and asked both sides to lodge complaints. At the time of filing the report, the process of registering the case was still on. In Mettupalayam Municipality, Chairman T. Satheesh Kumar and Commissioner Saravanakumar had to adjourn meeting as AIADMK and DMK councillors staged a walkout protesting the move to hike rent for shops and other commercial establishments owned by the municipality.
