Forest Department officials rescued an ailing leopard in the Nilgiris district on Sunday and are administering treatment.

According to C. Badrasamy, District Forest Officer (Nilgiris South Division), a male leopard, estimated to be around three years old, was spotted near human habitations at Kundah around 11 a.m.

The locals alerted the Forest Department, which sent a team to investigate.

Mudumalai Tiger Reserve (MTR) Veterinarian E. Vijayaraghavan and others examined the animal and found that it was suffering from a neuromuscular disease that rendered it almost immobile. As a result, it was unable to hunt and was very weak from malnutrition.

They placed the leopard in a cage and have taken it to a Forest Department office in Ooty for further observation.
