‘BJP stand exposed by nuclear deal’

"PMANE will not have any association with political parties’’

The Bharatiya Janata Party that once labelled the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) as U.S. agents now stood exposed by inking a nuclear deal with the very same government, said S.P. Udayakumar, convener of the movement.

Addressing reporters on the sidelines of an event organised by the Anti Nuke Collective, Kovai, he said when it was in the Opposition, the BJP called the PMANE names. But its actions now – agreement inked with the U.S. government – betrayed its duplicity.

This was more evident in letting the Indian insurance companies pay for faults that could be in the nuclear reactors to be set up by the U.S. companies.

On the Koodankulam Nuclear Power Project, he said that on the one hand, the Centre increased power supply and on the other it conducted disaster management training programme for villagers.

Mr. Udayakumar said that his movement would steer clear of politics and not have association with parties as they had not helped advance its case.
