Demonstration held

The AITUC held a demonstration here on Monday demanding that conservancy workers employed on contract with the Coimbatore Corporation be given permanent employment.

In a release, the union said that for the last several years more than 2,000 contract workers had been working for the corporation, though the law clearly stated that for positions where permanent employment was possible there should not be contract employment system.

The contract workers got only Rs. 150 a day as wages and were told that the payment was after the deduction of provident fund and ESI.
