Grant of subsidy: CBI probe sought

July 06, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Vivasayegal Sangam (not affiliated to any political party) has sought an inquiry by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into alleged irregularities in the grant of fertilizer subsidy to farmers.

Sangam general secretary P. Kandhasamy expressed confidence that an independent agency like the CBI alone could find the truth. This would help the farmers get the benefit directly, he said this at a Farmers’ Day observance at Thudiyalur on Sunday.

The party also urged the government to extract oil from copra procured by the government and to sell it through public distribution system outlets. It sought taluk-level grain and cold storage facilities, subsidy on water-soluble fertilizers, waiver of all the loans obtained by farmers, and monthly pension of Rs.5,000 for farmers aged over 60 years.

Their other demand included closure of the illegally operating mineral water plants close to the originating points of the Noyyal river.
