The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) is committed to providing necessary support to transgenders, said Senior Civil Judge and Secretary of the DLSA S. Jaganathan while addressing a legal awareness programme for transgenders organised here on Thursday.

Support

He said that the camp was aimed at understanding legal concerns faced by members of the transgender community and to study the possibilities on how the DLSA could offer them free legal support. During the camp, participants were elaborated on their basic legal rights as citizens of the country.

Advocates, while addressing the participants, said that many transgenders were not aware of their rights, which is very important to avail legal services. They said that the Supreme Court’s direction to the governments to ensure that transgenders were provided education and employment opportunities through reservations could come true only when it was popularised among various stakeholders of the society.

Mr. Jaganathan said that more such camps will be organised for transgenders.

The organisers said that an action plan will be prepared for creating better awareness among transgenders on the Supreme Court judgment, which has announced transgenders as the third gender.

President of Coimbatore Mavatta Thirunangaigal Nala Sangam Kulali and members of the association thanked the DLSA for organising the programme.
