Unperturbed by the ‘noisy’ and ‘smoky’ celebrations in the surrounding areas, the 100-odd families staying close to the banks of 300-acre Nanjarayan Tank completed a ‘hat-trick’ on Deepavali day this time.

For the third consecutive year, they did not burst firecrackers just to ensure tranquillity and thereby, not to disturb the hundreds of migratory birds that came to the Tank from within India and from continents such as Europe and North America.

“It is remarkable that at least a section of people are still courteous to our ‘guests’ that fly to the area to avoid winter conditions in their native tracts,” K. Ravindran, secretary of Nature Society of Tirupur, told The Hindu . He was one of the bird watchers who educated people near the Tank against bursting crackers a few years ago. According to bird watchers, the migratory birds might not return if the environment was disturbed through bursting of crackers.

Noises and lights that came out of the crackers could upset the daily life cycles of birds, they added.
