Members of the Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam (TPDK) were arrested by the city police on Thursday for blocking road in front of the Singanallur bus stand, in protest against manual scavenging.

The cadre led by its Coimbatore City president V. Gopal said that over the last two days they made representations to the Corporation authorities against the practice.

Safety equipment

They asked them to provide the conservancy workers with the required safety equipment if the civic body did not give them machines to clear drains – as directed by the Supreme Court. But they were agitated when they spotted some conservancy workers clearing the drainage with their hands near the bus stand.

Hence, the cadre blocked the road for sometime, disrupting traffic.

The demonstrators were booked under Sections 143 (for unlawful assembly) and 341 (wrongful restraint) of the Indian Penal Code, arrested and released later that day.

Cheating

The Kattur police are on the lookout for three persons for allegedly cheating Raju (45), a farmer of Thrissur in Kerala, by posing as army personnel.

The police said that the farmer had come to Nanjappa Road to buy a pump motor and had a sum of Rs. 60,000 in his bag.

It is learnt that the accused blocked his way and said they want to check him and took away his money.

The police said that the man realised that he was cheated when he checked the bag after the three persons left.
