Sand smuggling: two held, truck seized

The District Rural Police arrested two persons on Monday on charges of sand smuggling and seized a truck.

According to the police, the truck was inspected at a police checkpost on Ramapattinam-Thavalam Pirivu Junction around 5.30 p.m. and found to contain two units of sand that were being smuggled to Kerala.

The police have arrested the lorry owner S. Bakrudin Ali Ahamed (29) and the driver H. Sudhir (22), both from Palakkad.

The Pollachi Taluk Police have registered a case and invoked sections of the Tamil Nadu Mines and Minerals Development Regulation Act, 1957 read with Section 379 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code. The two were remanded in custody. Further investigations are on.

Body recovered

The decomposed remains of a man was recovered from a well in Perianaickenpalayam here on Monday. His identity is yet to be ascertained.

The police suspect that the man may have been murdered and have sent the body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.

Based on a complaint by the local Village administrative officer (VAO) Shivakumar, the Perianaickenpalayam Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Fast observed

Students of the Forest College and Research Institute at Mettupalayam near here observed fast near the college premises on Tuesday pressing a set of six demands.

They demand the immediately announcement of the results of the tests for recruiting forest rangers and relaxation in the eligibility norms for this post.

Land fraud

The City Police have charged three persons with land fraud.

According to the police, Mani, Siva and Jeganathan prepared forged documents for a piece of land at Kuruchi village and sold it to Rafiq Ahammad (40) of Palani on July 5. The Podanur Police have registered a case and are investigating.

Ganja seized

The District Rural Police have charged three persons on charges of possession of ganja.

According to the police, Vivek (23) and Sakthivel, both from Vadavalli, were found in possession of 1,250 grams of ganja. Vivek had been arrested while Sakthivel was absconding.

In a separate incident, Sorichi alias N. Kaliammal (71) of Ayyampalayam was arrested after she was found to have 100 grams of ganja.

The police have invoked Sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. Vivek and Kaliammal have been remanded in custody. Further investigations are on.

Lawyers booked

The Bar Council of Mettupalayam President Kanagasundaram and 42 other lawyers sere arrested after they staged a road roko near the Mettupalayam Bus Stand on Monday. They were protesting against cancellation of the inauguration of the Integrated Court campus at Annur Road.
