Wind energy evacuation expected to improve this year

April 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:38 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Tamil Nadu, which has about 7,500 MW of installed wind energy capacity, is likely to see better evacuation of wind energy this year.

Green corridor

Chairman of Indian Wind Power Association told presspersons here on Monday that the green corridor, which is being set up in the State with assistance from the Union Government, is expected to be completed by 2017. Though the corridor is for the new wind mills, the existing ones will also benefit.

The Union Government has set up a renewable energy management centre in Gujarat on a trial basis last year and a similar facility will be set up in Tamil Nadu too.

Infrastructure

The required infrastructure and facilities for better evacuation of wind energy is being created in the State.

In 2012, nearly 12,000 million units of wind energy were produced in the State. The contribution of wind energy to the total energy consumed was nearly 16 per cent. This year, it is expected to be higher, he said.

The Union Government is looking at increasing installed wind energy capacity in the country to 65 GW from the current 23 GW by 2020. The country has the capacity to manufacture 10,000 MW of wind mills a year.

Bankers and investors have also evinced interest in the sector.

With the supporting infrastructure for evacuation, installed wind energy capacity can be increased to the targeted level, he added.
