Metro commuters could expect some relief from crowding as the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has decided to put additional trains into service during off peak (11 a.m. to 4.30 p.m.) and evening peak hours (4.30 p.m to 8.30 pm) from Monday.

This induction of additional trains into service will help thousands of passengers during these hours to reach their destinations on time, besides more comfort.

Metro officials said, from Monday onwards, there will be a total of 17 additional trains performing 104 extra train trips during off-peak and evening peak hours on all Lines of the Metro system (except the loop line Inderlok/Kirti Nagar to Mundka and Airport Express Line).

“The move is aimed at decongesting the evening peak hour passenger rush and also to encourage passengers to avail Metro services during off-peak hours. This new plan will help in facilitating a comfortable train ride for all its passengers throughout the day. The move will also help in providing increased frequency of trains during these hours to the passengers,” a metro spokesperson said.

Two additional trains each would be inducted both during the off peak hours and the evening peak hours on the Jahangirpuri-HUDA City Centre line. However, on the Dwarka Sector 21 - Noida City Centre/Vaisahli line an additional train would also be inducted during the morning peak hours besides four trains during the off peak hours and three trains during the evening peak hours. These two lines are the busiest lines across the existing Metro network.

The average daily ridership of the Delhi Metro is 25 lakh. “From 2010 to 2014, DMRC has increased the number of coaches from 640 to 1076, an increase of almost 70 per cent across the network. In these years, all four coach trains on Line-2, 3 and 4 – the busiest lines of the Delhi Metro have been converted into 6 and 8 coaches and Line-1 have also got number of 6 coach trains to accommodate increased passengers,” a metro spokesperson said.
