AAP calls for SIT to investigate anti-Sikh riots

November 01, 2014 10:08 am | Updated November 16, 2021 09:48 pm IST - NEW DELHI:

Welcoming the Centre’s move to increase the compensation amount for the 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims, the Aam Aadmi Party demanded that the Narendra Modi-led government immediately set up a Special Investigation Team (SIT) for a fair investigation.

During its brief stint in Delhi, the AAP government here had recommended setting up of an SIT to re-investigate the riots.

“On Thursday, the Central government announced an additional compensation of Rs.5 lakh each to the next of kin of the 1984 riot victims. This is a good step, but the harsh fact is that helpless families and relatives of riot victims have been endlessly waiting for justice,” a party leader said.

He added that the then Delhi Cabinet had sent its decision to the Lieutenant-Governor on January 30.

“Nine months have passed and it is surprising that the decision is still pending. If the BJP and its allies are serious about providing justice to the 1984 riot victims, the Central government must notify an SIT without further delay,” he added.
