The Punjab police on Sunday arrested here Delhi Aam Aadmi Party MLA Naresh Yadav in connection with the alleged sacrilege of the Koran at Malerkotla in Punjab on June 24.
“We have arrested Mr. Yadav from his office at Vasant Kunj,” Sangrur SSP Pritpal Singh Thind told The Hindu .
Arrest warrants against Mr. Yadav were issued by the Malerkotla judicial magistrate on Saturday.
“Mr. Yadav will be produced in the local court,” said Mr. Thind.
The MLA has been booked under different Sections of the IPC including 295 (injury or defiling place of worship with an intent to insult the religion of any class) besides Sections 109 and 153A.
It was after one of the main accused Vijay Kumar had claimed, during interrogation, that he committed the act at the behest of Mr. Yadav, the Punjab police booked the MLA. Earlier this month, the Punjab Police summoned Mr. Yadav for questioning over his alleged role in the conspiracy to desecrate the Koran.
AAP leaders and Mr. Yadav have been claiming innocence saying that it is a political conspiracy to defame the AAP.
