The Delhi police admitted before the High Court that there were at least five cases in which passports had been issued to people who had fake or non-existent addresses, because of some policeman who had been involved.
They had been asked to file a response to a public interest litigation that had come before the court of Chief Justice G. Rohini and Justice R.S. Endlaw. The petition had stated that passports were being issued to people who were not living at the addresses given in the application.
The police said that there were five instances and this had prompted them to question the local ASI who had admitted to not carrying out physical verification of the address. After this, the official had been suspended pending a departmental enquiry.
