Lawyers call off strike

July 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:17 am IST - NEW DELHI:

Lawyers of the Delhi High Court on Monday called off their strike in protest against a Bill that proposes enhancing the Court’s pecuniary jurisdiction from Rs.20 lakh to Rs.2 crore, which would result in a significant reduction of workload with thousands of civil suits being transferred to district courts in the Capital.

The Executive Committee of the High Court Bar Association (HCBA) said that since the Delhi High Court (Amendment) Bill, 2014, was unlikely to be taken up in the immediate future because of a logjam in the Parliament, it was suspending the call for abstention from judicial work.

With the withdrawal of the strike, judicial work in the High Court is set to resume from Tuesday.

The HCBA thanked lawyers for their “unprecedented show of unity” and making the abstention call a success.
