Intermittent showers brought temporary relief to Delhiites, although proper monsoon downpour continues to play truant. In the absence of any prolonged precipitation, maximum temperatures remained above normal on Monday with Safdarjung recording 37.4 degrees Celsius and Palam 38.5 degrees Celsius. By 8-30 p.m., Sadarjung had received 2.6 mm of rainfall.
Not the typical monsoon rainThe rain, Meteorological Department sources said, is not the characteristic monsoon shower. “It is of intermittent nature unlike monsoon rain which is prolonged. This is part of a cycle by which every four to five years the El Nino (heating of Pacific waters) interrupts our monsoon,” a MeT scientist told The Hindu .
Under overcast skiesTemperatures in Delhi are expected to stay between 27 and 36 degrees Celsius under overcast skies. Stormy weather is expected to bring intermittent rain with winds.
Temperatures in other parts of North India — like Narnaul, which was five degrees below normal at 29 degrees Celsius maximum — however have seen a significant drop.
