The stretch from Andheria Mor to Fortis Hospital can now be widened to ease traffic with the National Green Tribunal on Friday lifting its interim ban on it and the felling of 810 trees after being assured that compensatory plantation of 10,000 has already been worked about.
A bench headed by Justice U. D. Salvi vacated the stay after the PWD placed before it the permission granted for removal of 810 trees from the stretch under the Delhi Preservation of Trees Act.
While revoking the interim stay, the Bench expressly mentioned that “there shall be no tree felling on rest of the phases of the project without permission”.
The civic agency informed the Bench of the 810 trees to be cut, 102 would be transplanted or trans-located on the same stretch of road and 6,400 new trees/saplings would be planted on the same stretch of road i.e. the construction site at Andheria Mor to Fortis Hospital Red Light on both sides.
The remaining 3,600 trees would be planted by the Forest Department in Kharkkhari Jatmat.
While vacating the stay, the NGT, however, directed the agency concerned to deposit Rs.2 lakh towards compensation for trees cut before the grant of necessary permission.
The NGT had put an interim stay on the widening of road on a petition against illegal felling of trees.
