The Election Commission of India has sought information from the Delhi government about the 21 AAP MLAs who were appointed as parliamentary secretaries and are facing office-of-profit allegations.
Plea for disqualification The Commission has written to the Delhi Chief Secretary seeking details of the nature of work the legislators executed and the facilities extended to them.
The EC had earlier served notices on the MLAs, seeking their response to a petition filed by Delhi-based lawyer Prashant Patel demanding their disqualification.
In their reply, the MLAs submitted that the post of parliamentary secretary was without remuneration or power. The personal hearing of the MLAs is > scheduled to start on July 14 .
After their appointment, the Delhi government moved a Bill to amend the Delhi Members of Legislative Assembly (Removal of Disqualification) Act.
The Bill sought retrospective exemption for the parliamentary secretaries from the provisions of disqualification. President Pranab Mukherjee refused to give his assent to the Bill earlier this month.
