December 20, 2014 08:19 am | Updated 08:19 am IST - NEW DELHI:

With greater emphasis being laid on transport-oriented development and decongestion of the city, Anand Vihar and Bijwasan railway stations will be redeveloped as world class stations in a few years.

The proposal for their redevelopment was approved on Friday at the 48th governing body meeting of the Unified Traffic and Transportation Infrastructure (Planning & Engineering) Centre (UTTIPEC) chaired by Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung.

The proposal for redevelopment of Anand Vihar Railway station was presented by the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation.

While the Anand Vihar Railway station has plans to handle about 2.1 lakh passenger a day, the whole complex will have a capacity of about 5 lakh passengers daily when fully functional. Connectivity of Anand Vihar complex has been planned with a proposed East – West Corridor for smooth traffic dispersal

The plan accounts for integration of various existing and proposed transportation projects in the area i.e. Anand Vihar Metro Station, Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS), Inter State Bus Terminal (ISBT), Integrated Passenger Terminal at Karkari Mod etc.

The proposal for redevelopment of Bijwasan-New Delhi station has been planned in two phases with an iconic building and modern amenities.

Phase-I includes development of the station building and development of mixed-use and commercial area. Phase- II includes acquisition from the existing village/ abadi area, farm houses, school etc. for future expansion of the station for yard complex and other commercial developments.

The building features line renewable energy sources and efficient waste and disaster management.

With focus on decongestion, arrival and departure have been segregated. There is also segregation for non-motorised traffic movement, parking and pick-up/ drop-off.

To minimize traffic on existing roads, three to four additional railway under-bridges would be provided on south-east side to connect between the existing neighbourhoods and the proposed development.

Besides this, 24x7 retail facilities and kiosks, cafes, stalls, etc. will be provided at all key areas where passengers especially women are expected to arrive and wait for autos/ rickshaws/ buses at late hours.

A tunnel road access from the airport side was also recommended by the governing body to provide additional alternative access to the station from south.
