Police waiting for the victim to provide a statement

A young woman was found injured on a road divider outside the All India Institute of Medical Sciences on Monday evening.

The incident was reported around 8-30 p.m. by Pankaj Tyagi, an assistant director at the Ministry of Labour. Mr. Tyagi said he was on his way home when he saw a Hyundai i-10 car being driven on the wrong side of the road next to the premier hospital.

“I was under the impression that the car was carrying a patient. To ensure a smooth passage for them to the emergency ward, I slowed down my own vehicle. But the next moment, I saw a girl being thrown out of the car,” Mr. Tyagi recalled.

He added that the victim appeared to be in her early twenties. “I offered medical assistance to the girl and advised her to get admitted to the hospital but she had some initial reluctance in doing so. She was injured and could barely speak. I made called the police control room,” said Mr. Tyagi. A police team reached the spot and took her to AIIMS trauma centre where she is undergoing treatment.

Preliminary investigations by the police revealed that the girl was travelling in an auto rickshaw and was being chased by a car. “Once they reached near AIIMS, the girl had an argument with an occupant of the car who attacked her,” said a police officer. It is also learnt that one of the passengers in the car was known to the victim. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) said they were waiting for the victim to provide her statement.

A case under section 354 (molestation) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant provisions has been registered, said the police.
