Bankmen to proceed with zonal-level strike in Dec.

November 28, 2014 06:15 pm | Updated 06:15 pm IST - Hyderabad:

Deciding to proceed with further agitations for immediate settlement of wage revision, bank workmen and officers will go a zonal level strike next month.

The one-day strike in the southern zone has been called on December 2, followed by similar protests on December 3 in north zone; December 4 in east zone; and on December 5 in west zone.

If the impact of the nationwide strike, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU) on November 12, is any indication the zonal strikes could also have a crippling effect on the operations. The strike earlier this month saw no work being transacted at public sector as well as old generation private sector banks.

ATMs, internet and mobile banking have, however, nowadays ensured a good level of insulation for the customers against the impact of the strike.

The strike earlier this month, according to the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), was intended to invite the attention of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and the Centre to the anguish of the bank employees without causing much inconvenience to the customers and public. “There is no positive movement on the side of the government or IBA despite the grand success of the strike,” the Confederation said.

Giving details of the zonal strike plan, AIBOC Joint General Secretary Ranjan Shetty on Friday said: It has become absolutely inevitable to proceed with further agitation programmes… We are confident that our esteemed customers will understand the situation and be sympathetic to our cause.”

The wage, he said in a statement, became due on November 1, 2012 and ever since the settlement remains inconclusive. With a stalemate prevailing over the level of wage increase, the employees went on a strike on December 18 last year and then a two day strike from February 10 this year. As it stands, the IBA has agreed to offer an 11 per cent increase in pay slip components while UFBU wants 25 per cent.
