The GMR group which constructed the international airport at Shamshabad here and currently operating it proposed to build a world class Hyderabad airport city at a cost of Rs. 750 crore which would create 15,000 to 20,000 jobs and sought the support of Telangana government on this count.
Making a presentation to Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao at the Secretariat on Friday, the group chairman G.M. Rao and other officials said it was also proposed to build a high class exhibition-cum-convention centre spread over 50 acres with a plinth areas of one lakh sq mts as part of the proposed airport city near Shamshabad airport. The exhibition and convention industry was a complex amalgamation of varied economic activity across sectors.
A release later said the Chief Minister assured to study the proposal before coming to a conclusion. He suggested to the group to give a thought to develop one more airport towards the north of Hyderabad, a hospital near Shamshabad airport, a world class theme park and a nature cure centre.
The presentation covered critical success factors and focus areas to develop brand Hyderabad on a global scale. The critical factors included developing a global networking destination, developing Hyderabad as a global city, smart urban infrastructure, strong international connectivity, promotion of tourism and setting up an international financial services centre. South Hyderabad where the present airport is located is one of the high potential locations for undertaking these developments.
On the achievements of the present airport, the group presented that it handled one lakh million tonnes of cargo and consistently improved the airport service quality.
The presentation was witnessed by Education Minister G. Jagadish Reddy, Rajya Sabha member K. Keshava Rao, Chief Secretary Rajiv Sharma and Principal Secretary to Chief Minister S. Narasing Rao.
