Bishops ‘sad’ at splurge on churches, houses

March 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:49 am IST - KOCHI:

A meeting of the Inter Church Council, attended by 40 bishops of the Episcopal Churches in Kerala, here on Tuesday expressed “sadness” at the increasing extravaganza and splurge on building houses and even churches.

The bishops gave a call to end creating situations and practices that “provoke” others and cause jealousy, according to a statement issued here on Tuesday. The Inter Church Council met under the chairmanship of Cardinal George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church.

Celebrations should be occasions that united people instead of them becoming a stage for wastage and extravaganza, the bishops said. They also said that everyone should strive to bring people together instead of shrinking into narrow-mindedness.

All religions should work to ensure social justice and workers coming from other States should be given justice, the bishops said as they also called on ministers of the churches to be on alert on the issue.
