BMS men play spoilsport with Metro depot works

November 01, 2014 10:56 am | Updated 10:56 am IST - KOCHI:

Work at Kochi Metro’s upcoming coach-maintenance depot at Muttom came to a standstill yet again on Friday as BMS workers stalled the work demanding jobs at the worksite.

They also threatened to halt work at other metro sites, if their workers are not given employment at the depot where piling is underway. The matter has once again been taken up with the police, metro sources said. “The depot will have to be ready by end of 2015 since first lot of metro coaches is expected to arrive here in January 2016. Precious time was already lost due to agitation by vested interests who wanted financial contribution to their parties and by local residents,” the sources said.

Already CITU and INTUC workers are deployed at the depot for civil works. Workers of the two unions are opposed to reducing their work force to accommodate BMS men. The contractor had sought police protection to resume the work.
