: Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will inaugurate the law reform meet and a workshop for Sessions court prosecutors on February 1 at Bolgatty Palace.
The meet and workshop are being organised as part of the 155{+t}{+h}anniversary celebration of the Indian Penal Code by the Directorate of Prosecution.
At a press conference, Director General of Prosecution, T. Asaf Ali said that the meet would discuss the need to remove some of the outdated penal provisions in the Indian Penal Code. The Indian Penal Code still retained some of the colonial legacy of the British Raj, he said. The meet would also moot proposals to reform certain sections in view of the emergence of new crimes such as encroachment of property by land mafia, financial frauds and pollutions.
He said that in fact, as many as 76 amendments had so far been made to the IPC. He pointed out that despite that, the penalty amount had not been enhanced in proportion to the devaluation of the rupee over a long period. He also said that the meet would also discuss proposals to incorporate provisions to award severe punishment to white collar crimes.
