October 02, 2014 08:19 am | Updated May 23, 2016 04:44 pm IST - Kochi:

Mayor Tony Chammany on Wednesday filed a complaint against two websites and others who allegedly published and shared defamatory statements against him on the Internet. The Mayor handed over the complaint to City Police Commissioner K.G. James.

In the complaint, Mr. Chammany said two news websites had published content claiming that he had conducted 23 foreign trips, 12 of them for studying waste disposal, misusing public funds.

‘Fabricated content’

“The fabricated content and wrong information has been drafted and circulated with criminal intent to cause harm and ill repute against me and my family through this medium,” he said in the complaint. He alleged that thousands of people had shared the content through Facebook and posted lewd comments defaming him.

He alleged that another news website published fabricated content saying a Congress leader had filed a complaint about his ‘extravagant house’ and that the Mayor was absconding. The complaint was accompanied by a list of names of people who shared the content on Facebook and posted rude comments.

Commissioner K.G. James said a case would be registered and the complaint forwarded to the Cyber Cell after a preliminary investigation.
