The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) has charted out a busy event calendar for the month with its multiple projects taking off in quick succession.

Chief Minister Oommen Chandy will inaugurate the freshly laid Astroturf football pitch at Ambedkar Stadium on August 10 at 10 a.m.

“Construction of 32 shops for the relocation of traders from the stadium would begin shortly on receiving the nod for the plan from the divisional town planner. About 60 per cent of the widening of the road alongside the stadium from the existing 12 metres to 20 metres has been completed and it would be commissioned within three months,” GCDA chairman N. Venugopal announced at a press conference here on Monday.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala will name the football VIP pavilion at the Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium after the late chief minister and the brain behind the stadium K. Karunakaran on August 20.

“The pavilion would feature photographs of important milestones in the history of the stadium right from the announcement of the stadium project by Karunakaran at Maharaja’s College ground while inaugurating Santhosh Trophy to the launch of the construction of the stadium and it’s commissioning,” Mr. Venugopal said.

The construction of bridge adjacent to Kaloor market would be completed shortly while the foundation stone for the Girinagar Bridge would be laid by the end of this month. The farm tourism project at Mundamveli consisting of caged fishing, walkway and park would be commissioned by the next month.

Helium balloon

The initial works for the installation of helium balloon would start towards the middle of the month and would be completed in two months. The balloon weighing, two-and-a-half ton, would be brought from London by the month-end, Mr. Venugopal said.

GCDA also proposes to construct a staff quarters on 1.40 acres owned by it at Kakkanad. A move to axe a tree in the property has been suspended at the request of Public Library chairman Ashok M. Cherian. Mr. Venugopal said the agency had not cut a single tree without the permission of Social Forestry Department.
