As part of the state-wide stir by the main opposition party, its city secretary G. Thalapathi led the demonstration near the Head Post Office on Scott Road here on Monday.

Various speakers from the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam here demanded the State government to immediately roll back the electricity tariff hike and any delay to adhere to the demand would only invite public anger and may turn up into a mass movement.

As part of the state-wide stir by the main opposition party, its city secretary G. Thalapathi led the demonstration near the Head Post Office on Scott Road here on Monday. The speakers, including senior functionary Pon Muthuramalingam and S. Veluchamy, urged the government to be considerate to the common men who were already suffering due to hikes effected on other essential commodities such as milk and bus fare by the government a month ago.

Further, they also blamed the AIADMK government for accusing the DMK, which was always people-friendly. “We never resorted to such steep hikes”, the speakers challenged.

In Madurai urban district, the agitation was led by former MLA and rural secretary P. Moorthy. Former minister A. Tamilarasi and councillor, M. L. Raj among others urged the AIADMK government to heed to public demand.
