Burglary in pawnshop

Twenty six sovereigns of gold and Rs. 1.75 lakh were stolen from a pawn broker’s shop at Vikramangalam near Usilampatti on Monday night.

Police said that S. Anbazhagan (53), the pawn broker, had closed his shop on Kovilpatti-Vikramangalam Road around 8 p.m. on Monday. When his manager turned up at the shop on Tuesday morning, he found that the shop was broken open and the valuables missing.

Forensic experts lifted fingerprints from the scene of crime.

Vikramangalam police are investigating.

Chain snatching

In the city, two incidents of chain snatching were reported since Tuesday evening.

In the first incident, P. Devi of Ramalinga Nagar in H.M.S. Colony lost her nine-sovereign gold chain to two bike-borne robbers under S.S. Colony police station limits.

The police said that the woman had come to pick up her daughter from the school bus when the incident happened.

In the other incident, a 75-year-old woman, B. Saroja, was targeted by two unidentified persons in K.K. Nagar. The duo ran away with a part of her three-sovereign gold chain early on Wednesday morning.

The woman, who was walking in front of her house, was approached by the two who came on a motorbike. The pillion rider sought details of an address. When the woman turned towards him, he snatched the chain. However, she managed to hold a part of the chain.

Anna Nagar police are investigating.
