The fervent election campaigning in the Madurai Parliamentary constituency came to an end on Tuesday evening with a few political parties choosing to wind it up in style with bike rallies and by inviting star campaigners.
Winding up his campaign trail, CPI (M) candidate B. Vikraman was one of the first in the constituency to end his campaign with a public meeting on Tuesday morning. Party functionaries and cadres of the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) opted to take out bike rallies.
The DMK had organised a bike rally from Othakadai to Iyer Bungalow, in which party supporters participated with over 700 bikes. DMK candidate V. Velusamy too accompanied supporters on a bike and later addressed a small meeting at Goripalayam junction.
Members of the Indian National Congress (INC) took out a rally where the candidate, T.N. Bharat Nachiappan, accompanied by party functionaries and supporters walked from the party office in Kamarajar Salai to Kamarajar statue, said district party president P. Sethuraman. He, however, said the party had planned to take out a bike rally as well and alleged that they were denied permission in the last minute by police.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) too ended its campaign on a low-key note. “We carried out door-to-door canvassing for votes in Masi Streets and Mahal area where I met the voters personally and told them about the AAP agenda and ideas for the constituency,” said M. Kamacis, AAP candidate.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) general secretary Vaiko was in the city and drummed up support to Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) candidate D. Sivamuthukumar, who is contesting from the constituency.
