The Madras High Court Bench here on Thursday directed the Director General of Police to disburse Rs.10.62 crore as compensation for having acquired 1.24 acres of school land at K. Sathanur village in Srirangam taluk in Tiruchi district for the use of Armed Reserve Police.

Justice M. Venugopal ordered that the compensation amount must be paid within seven weeks. The order was passed on a writ petition filed by K. Dhamodharan, secretary of Selva Dhamodharan Higher Secondary School, run by Ayyamperumal Konar Trust. According to the petitioner, the State government had acquired 15.96 acres out of 17.21 acres owned by the school in 1970 for establishing a training facility for the Armed Reserve Police. After the acquisition, the remaining 1.24 acres of land remained under the possession of the school.

The AR policemen encroached upon the remaining portion of the land. Finally it was agreed upon in 2008 that the government would acquire the remaining land too for a consideration of Rs.10.62 crore but the money was not paid.
