In the wake of water level rising fast in the Vaigai, the district administration on Thursday issued a flood warning for people living in low-lying areas along the banks of the river.

Collector L. Subramanian has advised people living along the banks of the Vaigai to move to safer places. In a press release, he said people should not wade through the water to cross the river, take bath or wash cloths in the river and allow domestic cattle to enter the Vaigai.

“The level in the river is rising steadily owing to continuous rain in the past few days, necessitating the flood alert. Manjalaru and Kodhaiyaaru are already in full flow. On Thursday, the level in Vaigai dam stood was 48.20 feet with an inflow of 3,716 cusecs and a discharge of 1,660 cusecs,” he said.

Mayor V.V. Rajan Chellappa has instructed the authorities to clear blockage in storm water drains to ensure free flow into the river, taking into account the rise in water level near causeways.
