Gold polishing tricksters are back

September 19, 2014 09:17 am | Updated 09:17 am IST - MADURAI:

Two women lost over 10 sovereigns of gold to tricksters who gained entry into their houses on the promise of polishing their jewellery here on Thursday.

The police suspect that same duo could have struck in both the incidents reported in places under the jurisdiction of Subramaniapuram and Thideer Nagar police stations. The youths, who were neatly dressed in white shirts and black pants, had approached the women with a powder that they claimed would give a shine to their gold jewellery.

In the first incident, the youths performed a magic of sorts by first polishing a brassware and later a silver ornament at a house in Vasantha Nagar. On seeing this, the resident, A. Maheswari (40), handed over her chain and a ring.

The men applied the powder on the jewels and asked her to put them in boiling water for sometime and left in a huff.

A few minutes later, when she opened the utensil, she found the jewels missing.

The youths also duped Kausalya (62), who was alone at her home in West Masi Street, and took away seven sovereigns of gold in a similar fashion.

In the first incident, the victim’s son, a Plus One student, was at home. “Had they alerted the police immediately, we could have launched a manhunt,” a police officer said.

The police said a video grab of the duo had been taken from the CCTV network of a commercial establishment in West Masi Street.
