Masked men took away over 120 sovereigns of gold, cash and home appliances from a house at Subbulapuram near T. Kallupatti here after assaulting the residents in the small hours of Sunday.
Police said about 10 dacoits broke open the rear door of the house of P. Rajamani, a TNEB Assessment Officer posted in Karur, around midnight. Hearing the noise of the door being broken, Mr. Rajamani, who had come home for the weekend, rushed to the rear door, where he confronted three men. The men, who had covered their faces with ‘monkey’ caps, started assaulting him.
By the time more men entered the house, Mr. Rajamani’s daughter Monisha, a student of Homeopathy medicine, locked the door of a bedroom from inside and tried to call police control room.
However, one of the dacoits smashed the glass pane of the door and entered the room. “He snatched my mobile phone and broke it after going through the call log,” Ms. Monisha said.
The dacoits, who ensured that lights were not switched on, made Mr. Rajamani, his wife Jayarani and Ms. Monisha lie down in a corner of the hall after tying their hands with plastic tags they had brought with them. They tied the legs of the injured Rajamani. Then they gagged them with clothes.
Mrs. Jayarani said while two persons, holding a knife and a machete, stayed with them, the others rummaged through all the almirahs and cupboards in two bedrooms and the living room using the light from their mobile phones.
“We had kept the jewels bundled in a piece of cloth and hidden it among dress materials, which they took away,” Mr. Rajamani said.
Blood stains were seen all over the white marble floor of the hall, dinning room, kitchen and the staircase.
Only after the dacoits left, the family members freed themselves and alerted neighbours.
Superintendent of Police Vijayendra Bidari, who inspected spot, said the culprits had worn gloves. A similar incident was recently reported in Srivilliputtur, he added. Five special teams have been formed to nab the culprits.
