The ‘Q’ Branch CID has strongly opposed bail applications filed by two individuals – N. Ranjit alias Sekar (30) of Tiruvallur district and J. Vivek alias Vivekanandhan alias Raja (45) of Namakkal district – arrested in 2010 and 2012 respectively on a charge of involving in armed struggle under the Communist Party of India (Maoist), a banned organisation.
Filing counter affidavits in reply to their bail applications, pending before Justice K. Kalyanasundaram, Deputy Superintendent of Police N. Rajaram said that there were chances of the two petitioners jumping bail and threatening the witnesses in a case booked against them in 2007 for providing arms training at Murugumalai Oothuparai near Periyakulam in Theni district.
Stating that the police could nab only three accused in 2007 since many others, including the petitioners, had managed to escape from the place of occurrence, the DSP said that Ranjit could be secured only after three years while Vivek managed to abscond for about five years. He feared that they might abscond once again if granted bail and hamper the trial in the long pending case.
Denying Ranjit’s claim that he was a homeopath and Vivek’s contention that he was a social activist, the DSP said that he had collected credible evidence to prove that they were hardcore Maoists wanting to wage a war against the Centre.
He also listed the number of co-accused arrested so far and the arms recovered from them, besides literature linking them to the CPI (Maoist). After taking the counter affidavits on file, the judge adjourned the hearing on the bail applications till Monday.
