Members of the Save Madurai Kamaraj University Coalition staged a demonstration in front of the university here on Thursday in support of their demands, which included revocation of victimisation orders against students, staff and faculty members.

The members, led by P. Vijayakumar, co-convenor, also sought an enquiry into the “irregularities” committed during the tenure of Kalyani Mathivanan as Vice-Chancellor and, if need be, action against her to recover the losses incurred by the university.

Mr. Vijayakumar claimed that Dr. Kalyani did not follow the Acts and Statutes of Madurai Kamaraj University in many instances and provisions of the Tender Act were flouted during her tenure. “There were a number of legal proceedings against the university caused by not following proper procedures. This resulted in the highest number of legal cases during her term and the maximum expenditure to the university,” he said.

The university also faced the maximum number of audit objections, totalling 704, involving an estimated Rs. 45.18 crore, in the audit report for 2013-14, he also added.

Later, a team of the coalition met the Registrar, N. Rajasekar, and submitted a memorandum seeking revocation of orders intended to victimise faculty members and other staff of the university.
