As part of the Music and Arts festival and 63rd anniversary celebrations, the Sri Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam will confer the ‘Madhurakala Praveena’ title on vocalist Bombay Jayashree on February 10.
The festival, which will commence at the Lakshmi Sundaram Hall from February 1, will have a number of concerts by popular carnatic musicians. As part of the line up, vocalist S. Sowmya is scheduled to perform on February 4, Nityashree Mahadevan on February 5, T.M. Krishna on February 6 and Sanjay Subrahmanyan on February 7 among other musicians.
Talent promotion
Speaking about the festival, L. Rajaram, Secretary of the Sathguru Sangeetha Samajam said that for the first time as a part of the annual festival, talent promotion concerts will be held, where young artists will be given an opportunity for performing on stage. “While they will perform from 4 p.m. to 5.30 p.m., time slots beginning February 4 to 9, the regular concerts will commence at 6 p.m. everyday from February 1 to 11,” he said.
While the public can attend the talent promotion concerts free of cost, daily tickets for the concerts featuring senior musicians will be priced at Rs. 100. Season passes can also be availed at Rs. 500 at the venue.
To mark the centenary birth anniversary of M.S. Subbulakshmi, the samajam will confer the ‘Madurai Sri Meenakshi Award’ in memory of the noted carnatic singer on vocalist Gayathri Venkataraghavan on the first day of the festival. “We have initiated this award for the first time this year and plan to confer it upon vocalists annually,” the members said.
