November 27, 2014 08:31 am | Updated 08:31 am IST - MADURAI:

As part of the investigation into the allegations of gross violation, show cause notices have been issued to as many as 90 owners of granite quarries and firms, it is reliably learnt.

Officials in the Department of Mines said on Wednesday that after the seizure of granite slabs/stones from various operators/firms in Keelaiyur and other places in the district, legal action had been initiated for selling them through auction.

After the then Collector, U. Sagayam, submitted a report to the State government that a whopping Rs. 16,000 crore had been allegedly siphoned off by various granite firms, investigation commenced into the irregularities.

When Anshul Mishra was posted as Collector replacing Mr. Sagayam, he had formed different teams, sealed the firms and seized the quarried granite.

After L. Subramanian assumed office as Collector last year, the legal action continued.

As many as 65 cases were filed in the Melur court so far, the officials said and added that show cause notice had been served now on the granite firms and they had been directed to appear before the Collector on December 3.
