In a tragic accident, a two-wheeler rider, R. Ganesan (33), was killed when his bike had a head-on collision with a college bus on New Natham Road near Iyer Bungalow here on Thursday evening. Police said that the victim died on the spot despite wearing a helmet. The Traffic Investigation Wing (Tallakulam) has detained the bus driver, Raja, for questioning.

The police said that the deceased was an insurance agent. He was returning home at Simmakkal from Iyer Bungalow, when his bike hit the bus coming in the opposite direction.

The bus had a huge dent on the front side. The police said that there was no tyre mark of the bus on the road which suggested that the driver had not applied the brake during the accident. The police said that one of the hands of the deceased was crushed when he was run over by the bus.

The relatives and friends of the deceased claimed that the helmet worn by Ganesan broke during the accident. “A portion of the helmet which caved in punctured his skull,” one of the friends claimed, quoting an eyewitness.

However, the police said that the helmet could have been broken in the impact of the victim falling on the road. The cause of the death could be ascertained only after the post-mortem, they added.

The relatives said that Ganesan had the habit of wearing helmet even before the helmet rule came into effect with renewed vigour on July 1.

He was recently engaged and his marriage was to take place next month, they said.
